Rowing at Yale

The men's team enters its first season under newly appointed Head Coach Mike Gennaro, who has been with Yale for all three of their recent IRA victories. His expertise on the US national team, combined with infectious positive energy, fosters an exciting environment to row. Legendary former Head Coach Steve Gladstone has moved into a supportive role and will continue to work with the freshmen. Since 2015, Yale Heavyweight varsity has maintained an undefeated record in both the Eastern Sprints and the iconic Yale-Harvard Boat Race. Additionally, they secured victories at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta and consistently sent numerous athletes and alumni to compete at the Olympic Games and World Championships.

On the women's side, Yale boasts the leadership of Head Coach Will Porter. Since becoming head coach in 1999, Will Porter has built Yale into a national women's crew powerhouse. The Bulldogs have an impressive record, with 20 NCAA Championship qualifications, six top-five finishes, and 17 top-10 finishes under his leadership. Porter boasts a 198-53 record, making him the most successful coach in Yale women’s crew history. Named in honor of the 1898 crew captain, this building hosts one of the world's most comprehensive indoor rowing facilities. Split into three sections for men's heavyweight, men's lightweight, and women's crew teams, each area is equipped with a moving water rowing tank, over thirty rowing ergometers, and ample room for body circuits, weight training, and stretching exercises. This architectural marvel seamlessly combines Yale's commitment to athletic excellence with its rich history and tradition.

History Makers in Women’s Sport

Title IX, the ground-breaking legislation passed on June 23, 1972, seeking to provide American women equal educational opportunities, gained traction in the athletic arena because of the actions of the women's rowing program at Yale University in 1976.

In 1976, the women's crew, though practicing on the same stretch of the Housatonic River as the men's program, was provided with antiquated equipment and endured a frustrating school policy that forced the women to sit on a bus, cold and wet after practices, while the men's squad got access to the locker rooms. Nineteen women from that 1976 crew chose to protest the unfair conditions, stripping bare in front of Joni Barnett, Yale's director of physical education, revealing "Title IX" scrawled on their bodies.

Their "Declaration of Accountability" drew massive national attention to the issue, and by the following rowing season, a women's locker room was added to the boathouse. This heroic stand led to Title IX ensuring all educational institutions in the US fund male and female sports equally. In the last 50 years, Title IX has played a significant role in enhancing women's participation in sports in the USA.

Yale-Harvard Boat Race

The Yale-Harvard Boat Race, dating back to 1852, holds a distinguished position as the oldest intercollegiate sporting event in the United States. This annual rowing competition between the two Ivy League institutions, Yale and Harvard, is steeped in tradition and fierce rivalry. In preparation for the race, Yale oarsmen undergo rigorous training at Gales Ferry, a picturesque site along the Thames River in Connecticut. The Varsity crews race four miles along the Thames River, while the Second Varsity races three miles, and the third and fourth varsity races two miles. The victorious team gets the honor of painting "the Rock" (a massive boulder 100 meters from the finish line) in their school colors.
